surah alaq,

Translation of Surah Alaq

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Here is an English translation of Surah Alaq (Chapter 96) from the Quran:

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists).

He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).

Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,

Who has taught (the writing) by the pen,

He has taught man that which he knew not.

Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deeds).

Because he considers himself self-sufficient.

Surely, unto your Lord is the return.

Have you seen him who prevents,

A slave (Muhammad) when he prays?

Tell me if he (Muhammad) is on the guidance (of Allah),

Or enjoins piety?

Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e., this Quran), and turns away?

Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)?

Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock,

A lying, sinful forelock!

Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers),

We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)!

Nay! (O Muhammad)! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah!”

This is the English translation of Surah Alaq, giving an overview of the message contained within the chapter.

Let’s incorporate that reflection into the story

Story: “From Arrogance to Humility”

Once upon a time, in a bustling city, there lived a young man named Ali. Ali was known for his arrogance and his disregard for the importance of knowledge and wisdom. He often mocked those who sought guidance and belittled the idea of spiritual devotion. His arrogance not only affected his own life but also created hurdles for those who aimed to do good in the community.

One day, as Ali walked through the busy streets, he came across a gathering of people listening to a wise scholar reciting verses from the Quran. Intrigued, he approached the crowd, curious to hear what they were discussing.

The scholar’s words touched the hearts of the listeners, but they seemed to bounce off Ali’s arrogant exterior. He stood at the back, mocking the sincerity of those who were engaged in the spiritual discourse. His mocking laughter echoed through the crowd, causing some to feel discouraged and disheartened.

However, as the scholar continued to recite Surah Alaq, something unexpected happened. The verses emphasized the importance of not obeying the disbelievers and instead falling prostrate and drawing near to Allah. The words struck a chord within Ali’s heart, piercing through his arrogance and awakening a sense of humility.

Ali realized that his arrogance had distanced him from Allah and prevented him from drawing near to Him. He understood that obeying disbelievers would only lead him astray, and he needed to turn his focus toward his Creator.

With a deep sense of remorse and determination, Ali approached the scholar after the gathering. He sought guidance and expressed his sincere desire to change his ways. The scholar, recognizing the sincerity in Ali’s eyes, offered him words of encouragement and advice on the path of spiritual enlightenment.

Ali’s journey of transformation took on a new dimension. He actively sought ways to draw near to Allah, to strengthen his connection and devotion. He devoted himself to prayer, spending hours in prostration, seeking forgiveness for his past transgressions, and seeking guidance for his future.

As Ali immersed himself in prayer and spiritual reflection, the community witnessed his profound change. They saw his devotion and witnessed the transformative power of drawing near to Allah. Ali’s story inspired them, reminding them of the importance of seeking closeness to Allah and not allowing disbelievers to sway them from the path of righteousness.

Word of Ali’s journey spread throughout the community, reaching even those who had once mocked his arrogance. People began to reflect on their own actions and attitudes, realizing the significance of falling prostrate and drawing near to Allah. They embraced the teachings of Surah Alaq, understanding that obedience to Allah and humility were the keys to a meaningful and fulfilling life.

And so, Ali’s story became a testament to the transformative power of seeking closeness to Allah. His journey from arrogance to humility and devotion inspired others to reflect on their own relationship with Allah and to draw near Him. It reminded the community of the importance of not obeying disbelievers and instead finding solace and guidance in the act of prostration, strengthening their connection with their Creator.
